The Value of Educational Travel: Top 3 Reasons from a Graduate Student

Educational travel is a powerful opportunity for skill development, cultural understanding, and professional development. As someone who hadn't traveled much before going to college, after a taste of educational travel, I soon developed a great appreciation for all the benefits it offers. travel. My journey began with a summer program in Croatia, where I studied business administration and gained insights into international marketing. That trip sparked my passion for global education, leading to more immersive travel experiences in the United Arab Emirates, Ghana, and Costa Rica. Each of these journeys provided something unique to my understanding of cultural perspectives and career aspirations in global marketing and communications. 

What is Educational Travel? 

Educational travel is more than just tourism; it’s a form of immersive learning that combines travel with academic and skill-based experiences. These trips offer students and professionals the chance to gain a deeper understanding of subjects such as language, art, or environmental conservation. One of the most well-known forms of educational travel is study abroad where students can earn credits while exploring different cultures and enhancing their education. 

The cornerstone of educational travel is hands-on learning. Instead of only reading about global history or marketing strategies, students visit important sites, speak with local experts, and participate in real-world projects. This experiential learning approach helps students make deeper connections and further understanding of the subject matter they study and prepare them for real-world applications of their studies.

For example, during my travels, I learned how to conduct research in the United Arab Emirates and how to apply it in my research studies. Every week in Croatia I had to interact with dozens of locals and quickly learned adapted to some of their different cultural norms. I also learned on each trip how people effectively communicated with each other and gained the skills to replicate that behavior. 

Educational travel fosters so many important life skills, making it an invaluable experience for anyone looking to expand their horizons.

One of the most valuable aspects of educational travel is the opportunity for cultural immersion. Living with a host family during my trip to Ghana provided an authentic experience that deepened my understanding of local customs and everyday life. Cultural immersion allows travelers to connect with communities on a personal level, fostering meaningful relationships and a better understanding of global perspectives. Nearly a year after my trip, I continue to talk to my host family because that deep connection was formed. 

It is one thing to conceptually understand that using your left hand to do things is disrespectful in many places and it is another to accidentally hand someone something with your left hand and apologize. You develop a deeper and more comprehensive idea of cultural practices, norms, and ideas outside your own being lived every day. Whether it’s learning sustainable farming practices in Costa Rica or exploring public health systems in Ghana, these immersive experiences provide invaluable cultural lessons that extend far beyond the classroom. 

Reason 3: Shaping Career Aspirations and Growth 

Educational travel doesn’t just broaden personal experiences and knowledge—it can also open doors to professional opportunities. My own experience in Croatia introduced me to the world of international marketing, sparking a career focus on global communications. During my time in the United Arab Emirates, I conducted research on digital advertising, exploring the differences between marketing in the U.S. and UAE. This project gave me hands-on research experience and expanded my understanding of global business practices. Similarly, my trip to Ghana allowed me to explore health communication by learning about the country’s healthcare system.  

My effort towards cultural immersion was not unnoticed by my program in Ghana, and soon I was offered to come back as an intern for one of their high school programs. That internship taught me a lot about international communication and media management. Not long after, I was hired for another international-focused internship. My international experiences not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also helped me develop skills that I now apply in my career.
